The Knuckles Massif, named for its signature knuckle-shaped peaks, rises northeast of Kandy. This UNESCO World Heritage site is home to misty cloud forests, scenic waterfalls, and remote rural villages. It is one of Sri Lanka's most rewarding hiking areas. We offer guided day hikes and overnight treks led by experienced local guides, with round-trip transport included from your hotel in Kandy.

The main Knuckles trailheads Deanston, Riverston, and Corbett's Gap are located 40 to 55 km from Kandy. Due to winding mountain roads, the drive takes 1.5 to 2.5 hours. Because public transport options are limited, all our treks include private round-trip transport from your hotel in Kandy.
Full Transport GuideThe driest months with the clearest views are generally January to April and June to September. Since the area has its own microclimate, mist and light showers can occur at any time. Starting early in the morning is recommended, as mornings are typically clear before mist rolls in during the afternoon.

Read GuideA registered guide is legally required for several trails within the Knuckles Conservation Forest, and is highly recommended for all other routes. The trails are not well-marked, weather conditions can change quickly, and mobile signal is unreliable. All Kandy Treks tours include a licensed local guide, entry tickets, and all necessary permits.
Trekking routes range from moderate half-day hikes to demanding multi-day treks. Our Cloud Forest Day Trek covers 15–18 km and requires a moderate level of physical fitness. The overnight camping trek is more demanding due to the longer distance and overnight stay. If you can comfortably walk for 4 to 5 hours on uneven terrain, you can complete our day trek.
The best times to hike are from January to April and June to September when rainfall is lowest. However, because of the range's microclimate, weather can change quickly and light rain or mist is possible at any time. Mornings generally offer the clearest visibility, which is why our treks begin early.
The main trailheads (including Deanston, Riverston, and Corbett's Gap) are located 40 to 55 km northeast of Kandy, which takes about 1.5 to 2.5 hours by road. To ensure a hassle-free start, we include round-trip transfers from any hotel in Kandy.
Yes. Visitors must pay entry fees and secure permits because the forest is a protected conservation area. When booking a tour with us, all entry tickets, trekking permits, and administrative details are handled in advance.
We recommend wearing sturdy hiking shoes and bringing a raincoat, a light warm jacket for high altitudes, sun protection, and personal water bottles. Leeches are common in damp forest areas, so we provide leech socks. We also supply fresh water, a picnic lunch, and first aid kits on all our treks.
