Trekking & Hiking in Kandy
Kandy sits at the edge of the Knuckles Mountain Range, a UNESCO World Heritage forest of misty peaks, cloud forests, and hidden waterfalls a short drive from the city centre. Our hikes are led by Senarath Gamini (Sena), a licensed tourist guide who has been walking these trails since 2014, and the small team he has trained alongside him. License No: TGCP/15/0184.
We run four signature trekking tours from Kandy. The Knuckles Cloud Forest Trek is our most requested day hike: a 15-18km, roughly 8-hour route through pygmy forests and misty grassland plateaus to a 1863m summit, graded moderate. The Hanthana Ridge Hike is shorter and easier: 12.8km through tea estates and pine forest in 4 to 5 hours, with views back over Kandy city. The Three Temple Loop is a leisurely, culture-focused route connecting the Gadaladeniya, Embekke, and Lankathilaka temples from the Gampola era via village footpaths and paddy fields. The Knuckles Overnight Trek is our longest route: a 2-day, 1-night, 32km loop with camping gear and a campfire dinner included, graded hard.
Every hike includes private hotel pickup from Kandy, a picnic lunch, trekking permits and entrance fees, and leech socks (leeches are common on the wetter trails, particularly after rain, but the socks we provide handle it). Groups stay small so Sena or your guide can set a pace that matches your fitness level and adjust the route on the day if the weather turns.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best hiking trail in Kandy?
The Knuckles Cloud Forest Trek is our most requested hike: a 15-18km UNESCO World Heritage route to a 1863m summit. If you want the views without the same physical demand, the Hanthana Ridge Hike is a 12.8km, 4-5 hour route through tea estates and is graded easy.
Is trekking in Kandy suitable for beginners?
Yes. The Three Temple Loop is a short, easy walk (around 1.5km on foot, plus temple visits) suited to any fitness level. Hanthana Ridge is also graded easy at 12.8km. The Knuckles Cloud Forest day hike and the 32km Knuckles Overnight Trek are graded moderate to hard and suit hikers with some trekking experience.
What is the best time to trek in the Knuckles Mountain Range?
The Knuckles Mountain Range can be trekked year-round. Sena, our lead guide, checks trail and weather conditions before every departure and will tell you honestly if a route isn't safe on a given day rather than run it anyway.
Do all treks include hotel pickup from Kandy?
Yes. Every signature hike includes private transport from Kandy and an English-speaking guide. The rest depends on the hike: the Knuckles treks include a picnic lunch, leech socks and first aid; the Hanthana hike includes snacks, refreshments and backup vehicle support; and the Three Temple Loop includes all temple entrance tickets, with a traditional lunch as an optional add-on.
