The Knuckles gets the headlines, but if you ask the people of Kandy where they go to walk, many will point to Hanthana.
The Hanthana range rises right on the southern edge of the city - a rolling wall of green ridges wrapped in tea estates and pine. It is the locals' favourite for good reason: it delivers some of the best panoramic views in the region without the rugged commitment of a full Knuckles expedition. If you have one free day in Kandy and want to see the highlands, this is the hike I recommend.
Where Is Hanthana?
The Hanthana Mountain Range sits just southwest of Kandy city - so close that the trailheads are only a short drive from town, near the University of Peradeniya. That proximity is its superpower: you can be walking a mountain ridge within half an hour of your hotel, and back in the city for dinner.
The range is a designated environmental protection area, home to grasslands, pine plantations, patches of forest, and a surprising variety of birds and butterflies.
The Experience: Tea, Pine, and Big Views
A Hanthana hike is a walk through working landscape as much as wild one. Here is the flavour of it:
- Tea estates: You start among manicured tea gardens, often with pickers working the slopes. It is a quintessentially Sri Lankan hill-country scene.
- Pine forests: Higher up, cool, shaded pine plantations line the trail - a completely different atmosphere, and a welcome break from the sun.
- The ridge and its viewpoints: The payoff is the ridgeline. On a clear day you get a sweeping panorama over Kandy city, the Mahaweli valley, and - in the distance - the silhouette of the Knuckles range itself.
- The Tea Museum: The former Hantana tea factory, now the Ceylon Tea Museum, sits at the foot of the range and makes a great add-on to understand the region's tea heritage.
How Hard Is It?
I rate Hanthana as moderate. Our standard route is a rewarding scenic ridge walk of around 16 km over 5 to 6 hours.
- The terrain is a mix of estate tracks, footpaths, and open grassy ridge. There is real climbing involved, but nothing technical.
- The main challenge is sustained uphill sections and, on clear days, sun exposure on the open ridge - bring a hat and plenty of water.
- Fitness: If you walk regularly and are comfortable with a few hours of up-and-down, you will be fine. It is more forgiving than a hard Knuckles day but still a proper hike.
Hanthana vs. Knuckles: Which Should You Pick?
I get this question constantly, so here is the honest version:
- Choose Hanthana if you are short on time, based in Kandy, want the best value views for the effort, and prefer a scenic tea-country walk close to the city.
- Choose the Knuckles if you want deep wilderness, cloud forest, waterfalls to swim in, and a more remote, immersive adventure - and you have a full day (or an overnight) to give it.
Many guests who fall in love with Hanthana come back for the Knuckles later. They complement each other beautifully.
Best Time to Go
The ridge is at its finest under clear morning skies, when the views stretch furthest. Mornings are also cooler for the open sections. As with everywhere in the highlands, weather shifts fast - an early start gives you the best light and the best chance of a cloud-free panorama.
What to Bring
- Comfortable trekking shoes with decent grip
- Sun protection: hat, sunglasses, sunscreen - the ridge is exposed
- At least 2 litres of water
- A light rain layer, just in case
- Your camera - those Kandy views deserve it
