One of the first questions I get from travellers is a simple one: "Sena, how do we actually get to the Knuckles?"
It is a fair question. The Knuckles Mountain Range feels remote - and that is part of its magic - but it sits surprisingly close to Kandy. The catch is that the last stretch of road is narrow, winding, and poorly served by public transport. Getting the logistics right is the difference between starting your hike relaxed at 8 AM or arriving frazzled at midday having missed the best light.
Here is my honest, local breakdown of every way to reach the range.
Where Exactly Is the Knuckles Range?
The Knuckles massif lies northeast of Kandy, straddling the border of the Kandy and Matale districts. Most of our treks begin from trailheads around Deanston, Riverston, or the Corbett's Gap side, which are roughly 40 to 55 km from Kandy city depending on the route.
That distance sounds short, but the mountain roads mean you should budget 1.5 to 2.5 hours of travel time each way. Do not trust the raw kilometre count - trust the clock.
Option 1: Private Vehicle with a Guide (What We Recommend)
For 90% of our guests, hotel pickup in a private vehicle is the right call, and not just because we offer it.
- You start on time. Trekking the Knuckles is a light-dependent, weather-dependent activity. An early, reliable start matters.
- The driver knows the shortcuts. There are two or three viable routes into the range, and the "best" one changes with road conditions and which trailhead we are using that day.
- Your gear stays dry and safe. No hauling packs on and off buses.
- Door to trailhead. You are picked up at your hotel and dropped right where the walking begins.
All of our Signature Hikes include hotel pickup and drop-off, with the vehicle size matched to your group.
Option 2: Public Bus (Cheapest, but Slow)
If you are a hardened budget traveller, it is possible. From the Kandy (Goods Shed) bus station, you can take a bus toward Matale or Rattota, then change to a local bus heading toward Riverston or Deanston.
- Pros: Very cheap. A genuine slice of local life.
- Cons: Multiple changes, infrequent connections into the mountains, and the last leg to the trailhead is often not served at all. You will likely still need a tuk-tuk for the final stretch. Realistically, this eats half your day.
I only recommend this for travellers with plenty of time and a taste for adventure in the journey itself.
Option 3: Tuk-Tuk or Ride App
A three-wheeler is fine for getting around Kandy, but for the Knuckles I would be cautious.
- The mountain gradients are hard on tuk-tuk engines, and not every driver will agree to the climb.
- Ride-hailing apps have patchy or no coverage once you leave the city, so you may be stranded for the return trip.
- If you do hire one, agree the full round-trip price in advance and confirm the driver will wait for you at the trailhead.
Option 4: Self-Drive (For the Experienced Only)
You can rent a car or scooter in Kandy, but I rarely recommend self-driving into the Knuckles unless you are confident on narrow, unmarked mountain roads.
- Signage is minimal and some junctions are unmapped.
- Mist can drop visibility to a few metres with no warning.
- Certain trailheads sit inside the protected conservation zone, where a registered guide is required to enter anyway.
A Note on Entry Permits
Large parts of the Knuckles are a UNESCO World Heritage conservation forest. Entry tickets and trekking fees apply, and some routes legally require an accredited guide. When you book a guided trek, all of this - permits, fees, and the paperwork - is handled for you. Independent hikers must sort it out themselves at the forest office, which can cost you time on the day.
My Bottom Line
If your priority is a smooth, early, safe start to a full day in the mountains, a private guided pickup is worth every rupee. If your priority is stretching your budget and you have the time to spare, the bus-and-tuk-tuk combination is doable - just start very early.
